Navigating Matriculation Season
The news of college closings, legal challenges to race-conscious admissions, pay to play scandals, racist incidents across various campuses, and research on the experiences of low income students on selective college campuses, bring up important questions for our field.
-How can we best inform ourselves for conversations with students and families?
-How we can best support and advise students of color, first generation students and/or low income students amidst these issues?
-How do we help students navigate the next steps on their college journey?
-How do we prepare them for challenges on campus, from imposter syndrome to historical exclusion to present tensions, and balance this with the concrete steps they need manage?
-How can we balance the frenzy of admission news with realistic advice and practical support for our students?
-What changes do we seek as professionals in the field?
Antonio Aponte, founder and Executive Director of the Latino College Expo, will moderate a conversation with two former admission officers at highly selective schools. We will be joined by Sugeni Perez-Sadler, formerly of the Barnard Admission Office, who is the current Senior Director of College and Career Planning at NYC DOE, and Leora Johnson, formerly of the Brown University Admission Office, who has also evaluated applications for Yale, and is the current Associate Director of Graduate Admissions at Baruch's Marxe School of Public and International Affairs.
Our conversation may reference the following articles and others on these topics.
